Great record, so much fun and so easy to listen to. Some of the purists think this is where they started to decline since they've adopted a more conventional rock sound, but for me it's easily on par with everything they've recorded before, if not better.
Finest Worksong is such a great opener, and that chorus really packs a punch. I love Michael Stipe's voice. _________________ All time

The peak of REM's powers. Last album recorded on IRS before they moved from the independent label. Also, the 1st album in coloration with Scott Litt. Perfection

I’m totally at odds with the unanimous praise posted so far.
Had to stream this as it’s been an age since I last heard at least half the tracks off it, but my opinion hasn’t changed. It’s my least favourite (and in my eyes the weakest) 20th century R.E.M. album by a country mile: half-arsed, choc full of filler, and the less said about the dreadful Wire cover the better. The singles and Finest Worksong aside, bilge. It’s also the only R.E.M. album I’ve ever sold, despite owning everything from Chronic Town up to New Adventures In Hi-Fi in one format or another.
Wouldn’t give a toss if I never heard it again, frankly. _________________ 'Reggae' & t'ing

This is still a good album but for all the acclaim it gets I much prefer Lifes Rich Pageant as an album.
Even though I am mad on REM I find this one of their weaker efforts..
But the next album they went on to do was a corker
