A close call here. Both good songs with interesting lyrics, but in the end the music of Mommy Dearest is more appealing to me.

Don't like neither, but Cassandra was sliightly more enjoyable and her album was way better too (though again this is my least favorite song (and the only one I would say is bad) from Overview On Phenomenal Nature).

It may have been different in an earlier time on BEA but Boldy James is much more my speed these days, though I do really like the chill & jazzy vibe of Hard Drive which has a lot of really good ideas mixed in (despite being ready to roll my eyes after the first minute)

Yikes. Heavyhitters. Both great nominations.

Hard Drive has that something something that pushes it ahead of the pack though. Very well executed track.

Absolutely, both fantastic noms. Didn't even think about nominating either song, shame on me. Both incredible albums too, though Manger on McNichols was better. Mommy Dearest is perhaps not that much better than Hard Drive, but the Biggie lines and the outro were some of the most heartfelt moments of 2020. Boldy and Sterling get my vote in the best matchup of the whole round 1.

Damn I've had some horrible luck with these first round match-ups. Hard Drive is fantastic, I'm tempted to vote for it over Boldy James but I'm still gonna go with my nomination. Boldy James has been one of the best rappers of the decade so far and Manger On McNichols is clearly his best album to date. The cinematic production from Sterling Toles is the best I've heard from any rap album this decade as well (maybe since 4:44). I was torn between nominating this track or Medusa but ultimately went with this one due to its emotional story telling and complex production.

Despite very different genres, these 2 songs have a very similar vibe. Both excellent production and fantastic jazzy backgrounds to the lyrics.

Ultimately I'm going for "Hard Drive", that shit hit me deep in my heart when I first heard it last year. But Boldy James is some good stuff.
