So whenever we spell the Ukrainian capital "Kyiv" instead of "Kiev," Russian propagandists treat that as "proof" of a "conspiracy," i.e., an attempt by Western media and politicians to "de-Russify" Ukraine — which as we all now know, they consider as rightfully belonging to Russia. During the past 8-9 years, they've conditioned their people to believe Ukrainian culture and language are all just an "illusion," or a kind of "mass psychosis." That's on top of the fact that conspiracy theorists in general are already super-into things like intentional misspellings, numerical coincidences, weird symbols, and so on. And of course Russians also use the Cyrillic alphabet, so the whole Latin character-set is foreign to them to begin with...
