Ha! I bet that mention subliminally lead to the overrepresentation of L’eclisse!
Anyway, edited. Added Goldfinger to the end for a bit more Connery Bond Cool. Removed the later entry of the repeat film.
And yeah pound for pound perhaps the greatest of decades for Antonioni. None of them I would say as of now are truly FAVES of mine. Still all have impressed me. _________________ -Ryan

All good Merc, updated.
I've been thinking of giving Kuroneko a rewatch recently, and I think seeing it on your list solidifies the fact I need to do that. I watched it during a Japanese binge a few years back, and I think it got los in the muddle (I remember liking it, but can't for the life of me remember the plot).
As of today, out #1 & #2 are only 1 point apart. Still anyone's game.

Thanks Hayden, for awhile this poll has kind of slipped my mind but have tried to catch up recently, might seem like a barer list than previous entries but will get something in before the deadline and try to do a 60s recap sometime soon. Still hoping to see a better representation of Russ Meyer on these lists sometime soon.

Which you may submit up to 25, but the final lists will be the top 10*.
(Short films are defined as films between the length of 2-39 minutes)
(This is the first time we have ever done this, and I'm sure there will be hiccups, but for now I'm just going to cross my fingers)
Please feel free to post short films via Youtube in the thread!
(Would love to have a short-film festival vibe— there's plenty to dive into).
*this may be increased depending on the popularity/submission results/public response | A couple thoughts/questions: It sounds like TV specials are eligible, which I was thinking about going into this. Another question, what about individual short films within anthologies? For example, Spirits of the Dead (1968), a 2-hour horror anthology comprising of three short films, each with a different director. We can vote for the entire anthology film on the features section, but are we also allowed to vote for the three films that make up Spirits of the Dead in the shorts section? They are each on the 40-minute cusp, so it's a grey area.
Spirits of the Dead is just one example. From what I've seen on letterboxd, there were quite a few anthology films like this in the 60s. I haven't actually seen any, though. Spirits of the Dead is on my watchlist. Start recommending shorts, BEA, cause my knowledge of 60s shorts is limited to (off the top of my head) Antoine and Collette, La Jetee, and all those holiday TV specials . I'm up for a festival. |
I worked on compiling my 60s shorts list this morning, and came up with a solid 23 — I'm actually really happy with it, but I'm also assuming I'm about to find a good handful more during the duration of the poll. I'll post some later this week. Have to admit, I think this portion of the poll could be the most exciting. (La Jetee and Antoine & Colette are both on my list).
My initial rules/thoughts on the matter:
—TV specials (not episodes) under 39 minutes will be allowed.
—Music videos will not be allowed.
& (I'll add)
—Anthology films will be classified as films, not individual shorts (unless compiled from elsewhere, but I can't think of any examples of that).
Say... the latest Wes Anderson quad-short series re: Dahl is eventually released as a singular piece— the individual shorts would be allowed to be submitted solo. Otherwise (like Spirits of The Dead), whole feature film. |
What about the Peanuts TV cartoons, are they episodes or standalone films?
1965 A Charlie Brown Christmas
1966 Charlie Brown's All-Stars
1966 It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
1967 You're in Love, Charlie Brown
1968 He's your Dog, Charlie Brown
1969 It was a short Summer, Charlie Brown

Can we see the film La rivière du hibou (Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge) from 1961 as a standalone Film or not? This is also in a three-story anthology film by Robert Enrico called "Au coeur de la vie" (1962).
