This thread grazes what the "is Jimi Hendrix a solo artist" thread did a few days ago. Not to overrun this thread, but I'd like people to think about what differentiates a solo artist from a band, and how coming up with a satisfactory definition is quite difficult. Think of the backing bands and how much they change (ship of Theseus type stuff), as well as the name the person or group decides to call themselves. At this point I can't even tell if Fiona Apple or Joanna Newsom are truly solo artists, not to mention releases under the name Miles Davis or Charles Mingus for example. Anyways, my outlaw moment aside, here's what I consider the best of what I might consider singer-songwriter albums, straight from ma chart:
Joanna Newsom - Ys
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel
Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender
Neil Young - After the Goldrush
Lisa Germano - Geek the Girl
Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks
T-Bone Walker - The Complete Recordings
PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me
Roy Orbison - 16 Biggest Hits
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
Mark Hollis - Mark Hollis
EDIT: also, if you like this kind of music, Norman is obviously the go-to guy
