Pretty good album, Fake Empire and Ada are some highlights, but to me there's a lot of forgettable tracks, and it feels a little bit too light-hearted when put against their dark, angst ridden masterpiece High Violet.

Coincidence that this is Album of the day, since The National is finally starting to click with me. I've been listening to High Violet all day. Haven't listened to this one yet.

This is one of my absolute favorite albums of the last decade. The National have a perfectly executed somber sound that I feel attuned to. Maybe it's because I am basically a sad bastard. Idk. I do know that this album is really impressive. There are no dud tracks here and the really great songs on here ("Fake Empire", "Green Gloves", and my fave "Slow Show") are gorgeously orchestrated to bring about huge emotional responses in their fans. I will say even I thought the album and the band was boring at first. But something about them got under my skin. And now I really adore this album and I have huge respect for the band as a whole.

The lyrics are very visual and convey the lost emotions of 20 somethings very well, IMO. And the vocals though not flashy or rangy are akin to a Nick Cave, and evoke similar beautiful-sadness concepts. And the music is well arranged and thick. The drumming in particular is most impressive and impinging, especially on "Fake Empire", "Squaler Victoria" and "Brainy"

I feel this is a superior album to both "Alligator" and "High Violet". This album is the only National album I have on my chart. Really fabulous listen.

I put High Violet on spin today as well, still gets me. I genetically can't wait for Trouble Will Find Me, I've got very high hopes - shame it'll be another month.

I just listened to this a couple of times a couple of years ago, but the song "Start a War" stuck with me, I really like that one. I really can't remember anything else, though.

I don't see that "High Violet" is better than this or even equal to this. "Boxer" is their masterpiece so far.

I don't know what it is about High Violet, but I prefer it by a bit!
