Whoop. This album is fantastic. Both Gloria and Land are fantastic in combining covers and original composition.

Truly one of the greatest albums ever made. It's a unique mix of rebellion and academia that you can't find anywhere else.

It's on my chart so obviously I adore it. It's just stunning. As Applerill alluded to, it contains a refreshing mix of snottiness and smarts, though I don't think that juxtaposition is particularly unique. However, when done well (as it is here) it's a beautiful thing.

Pretty amazing album no doubt. Some really inspired poetic songwriting here and just great punky/rock and roll energy mixed in. Really is a natural progression from the rock meets literature of mid 60s Dylan- particularly "Highway 61 Revisited". She was a shaman with her words and music in her prime.

This album also features a great guest apprarance by Mr. Tom Verlaine on I beleive "Break It Up"! Absolutely gorgeous guitar part he contributes there. He may show up somewhere else too- I forget.

I need to revisit this beauty. I will say that I adore her follow up "Radio Ethiopia" slightly more- but damn! they are both stellar introductions to the greatness that was Patti Smith!

I love this album of the day! It really can't be over estimated (or it would be a challenge to) how important this album was/is to the development of Punk, Indie Rick, Alternative, New Wave, songwriters, And just the increase in recognition of females in rock music!

I forgot to mention that I was at the 2005 performance of this album in its entirety in London, which was recorded and added as a bonus disc for the 30th anniversary edition. The entire show had Tom Verlaine on guitar and Flea on bass. It was brilliant, obviously. Lots of famous faces in the crowd too, including Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream who was sat like two rows in front of me if I remember correctly.

I'd also like to mention that I love the original artwork, the one on which there is a perfect triangle of light on the wall behind Patti that reaches its apex just above the 'h' in 'Smith'. That triangle of light has seemingly been (somewhat inexplicably) removed from pretty much all reissues of the album, although you can see it if you look hard enough in the picture below.

Anyway, to reiterate, this album is just delightful. One of my all-time favourites.

Bob Dylan.

Anyways, I need to listen to this again. From what I remember, some parts were stunning; others, not so much. "Gloria" is amazing, absolutely blows away Van Morrison's original and has one of the best buildups I've heard. "Land" is really great as well. As was Birdland and Redondo Beach. I don't remember much else in between.

Wow, never noticed that.

This is a good album but Radio Ethiopia is better IMO.

I slightly prefer Easter, though, mostly because of Birdland, which is too long, and I think Radio Ethiopia is excellent too, although inferior to the other two. Patti Smith has my favorite voice in music ever, male or female.
