A really easy statement to make... ...and I'll say it as well.

This was my first rap/hip hop love. This was the album that made me interested in getting into other hip hop music. This album is truly gorgeous and astoundingly great. Still in my top 5 rap albums.

Oh and "Ain't Hard To Tell" had got to be one of the greatest songs ever. Definitely a song that literally made my jaw drop when I first heard it.

i used to listen to this one all the time. i can rap 'ny state of mind' almost perfect, word for word. and the beat on 'it ain't hard to tell' mesh so well with his vocals, don't try to listen to it on youtube tho. they got the bass all fuct.

All the hip-hop music I was used to before listening to this was a couple of singles by Eminem, Jay-Z and Kanye, but after listening to this, Nas blows all of them out of the water. Because of Illmatic, it made me want to explore and expand on my views of hip-hop.

Illmatic does a masterful job of portraying a certain state of mind and a way of life that few records have done nearly as well. Listening to this gives you an incredible look into what it is like growing up in poverty and what you have to do when you have so few options available to you. One of the few records that doesn't have a single weak moment on it.

For some reason, no matter what production value, or what great lyrics have hit my ears in the hip-hop corner of the world, nothing has topped this for me yet.

I'm even not sure why, but I can't deny it. A hip-hop masterpiece.
