This is one of those rare albums that I do not ever intend on listening to. The Widow sounds like a atrocious Muse knock-off with extra whines and "edgy" solos. Just not what I want to endure. _________________

Ouch! ^^^ harsh!
Honestly this album was my jam for a solid month when I was 16. When it first came out I was utterly in love. It still is a very good album in my opinion. It clumsily mixes up hardcore punk, brutal repetitive metal riffs, awesome sweeping guitar solos, overly dramatic and at times (yes) grating vocals, and other stuff like Spanish sounding music. It is actually a pretty engaging LP. Need to revisit.
And "The Widow" is a cool track. "Cygnus..." is the standout. _________________ -Ryan

This.
I tried, I really did, but Mars Volta mostly makes my ears bleed.

I've heard this called "metal." How incredibly offensive. _________________

This and De-loused are my favourite Mars Volta albums - although I wish 'The Widow' stopped at 3:10, as the 2 1/2 minutes of noise after it kills it.

It has kind of a '70s prog feel with its ostentatious arrangements and high ambitions, and of course you're right about the metal elements as well. I can kind of see the appeal, but it's just not my scene.
