It's pretty grand. I don't love "flying high..." And some of the other songs that aren't really songs to me. But most of the album is composed of classics. It's not nearly so great as Let's Get it On. But, being a boring bastard, I would say it is superior to Here, My Dear and I Want You.
Me and my friends did a little show a couple years ago for Christmas Eve. I ended up singing the title track here and "inner city blues" That was fun. _________________ -Ryan

It's so good it's not even funny, though it really needs to be relistened by me. About as great as Let's Get It On if I remember well, and I really need to check out his other works.

Waaaaaaaaaaaay overdue for a relisten. I loved it the one time I heard it but just haven't gotten around to listening to it again for some reason. But yes, very very good.

A majestic song cycle of incredible beauty. In the past, I was critical of the album's lyrics and though I stand by those criticisms, I think they largely missed the point. The album works much of its magic on a subconscious level, as if we're tapping into the dreams of its protagonist. It functions as social commentary, but only indirectly -- it's meant to be a fictional cry for help, not a polemic. Although the album was written specifically about the Vietnam War, the themes are really timeless. So long as there is violence, hate, and ignorance in the world, it will always have something to say.

Instantly liked this album and was actually the one that got me into 70's soul and funk.

An all time classic - a masterpiece. Can't imagine a chart without it... _________________ "And can’t you see you’re in on it?
