You say this, and yet many of the albums that are in my top ten now were initially added based on one listen. If I'm going to love it forever, I'm probably going to love it on first listen.
But I also think how much music you have heard adds to it. I don't even have a full top 100 of favourites, at the moment.

That's a fair point, at your age I don't think I could've made a malleable top 20, it was the best years for cohesive music development for me. Interesting to see how your taste and views move at that point of age for sure.

It varies a lot. Really just until I know it well enough to confidently say I love it. I do, however, require myself to listen to an album a minimum of two times before including it on my chart, no matter how much I love it on first listen.
Went with 4-7 because my average is probably somewhere in that range.

Man, if an album is amazing and breathtaking and impressive on first listen then I don't need to hear any number of times more to decide I love it. If I love it a lot I add it to my chart. I like my chart to reflect my present obsession or favorites just as much or more than albums that I've loved for a long time. It doesn't take me long (sometimes) to recognize how much I love an album. Examples: Rust Never Sleeps, Chill Out, Southeastern, The Shape Of Punk To Come, Liquid Swords were all basically one listen then on my chart. All still there.
And if I find tht I don't like it so much later, even a week later (like Government Plates) I will remove it from the chart. _________________ -Ryan

When I look at my chart I would say that about 30% of the albums could have been included at first listen. Particularly in the top 50. Albums like the Dark Side of the Moon or OK Computer did not require repeated listens before I knew they would be with me forever. On the other hand, about 25% I was indifferent to or even were actively disliked by me before I got into them (I never could figure out what the fuss was about Tom Waits in my 20s).
I cannot think of a single album that I at one time loved and now hate or dislike. However, if I were to make a chart of albums which at one point or another were among my favorites but for which I am now totally indifferent, that could be a long long long chart.
Then again, I have never been of the times when it comes to music. I started listening to bands like Radiohead, Tool or Muse once they already had 4 to 5 albums out. I figured I ought to give them a spin to see what the fuss was about and got very quickly hooked but I have been definitely a late oncomer to most bandwagons.
