Slow-core at its best. This is actually quite heavy, the distortion is loud and the lyrics tender.
The lead singer sings on Wird: "I wanna walk/But I have to crawl", and I guess that sums up Codeine's music as well. They could play fast and aggressive, but instead they tone it down and plays in a sleepy slumbering style. They could play Hardcore, but instead they play Slowcore.
Best slow-core record ever. A masterpiece that must be in every collection. The drums of Doug Sharin is perfect.
Released in 1994 on Sub Pop, The White Birch is Codeine's second and final studio album. It is widely hailed as their masterpiece and a definitive landmark of the slowcore genre.
