Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.0/100, a mean average of 69.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.0.

This was my introduction to the Mountain Goats, and I dug it at the time. The whole concept is fun, and it has a rock opera feel to it. Musically, very interesting.

John Darnielle delivers another album full of colourful characters and situations this time based around the D&D fantasy board game popular in the 80’s . Alas unfortunately at the end of the day it’s all a bit of snooze fest except for ( and agreeing with the previous poster) track 10 “Cadaver Sniffer Dog” which is hands down the best moment here
“ I cast thee poor album spell upon your wretched soul”
John Darnielle's band was left with an album that paid tribute to Gothic culture called "Goths". Two years later, they are back with a new teen theme with their 17th album entitled "In League With Dragons". John Darnielle has decided to deliver a concept record articulated around... the game Dungeons and Dragons. The Mountain Goats composes their music around this theme of dragons and other fantastic creatures. "In League with Dragons" is quite disappointing and is less unitary, less cheerful than their previous albums, although deploying a wider musical spectrum and a more refined literary ambition. "In League with Dragons" is less immediately catchy and fun than "Goths", it is in line with the rather dark "All Eternals Deck" or "Heretic Pride". But hey, Mountain Ghots has nothing to prove after 30 years of career.
5/10
Best track: "Cadaver Sniffing Dog"
