Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 9% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.2/100, a mean average of 77.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.4.

I saw Victoria Williams play live once. The show was at a small club in Asheville, North Carolina, and it was after she'd been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and after multiple tribute albums had been recorded to help her pay for her medical bills. She and then-husband Mark Olson were then touring whenever Williams's symptoms went into remission, a period when they called themselves the Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers. Their gigs were charming if shambolic affairs, with Williams's dogs often sleeping on the edge of the stage. Williams came to rely on Olson for getting on and off the stage and even, at times, putting her guitar over her head. Something similar could be said of most of Victoria Williams's records: often brilliant songwriting, with a recording process that was often scattered, messy, and uneven. Loose is a great word to describe it, although this one is ironically her tightest solo record, with some of the most haunting songwriting, best exemplified by the incredible and schizophrenic "Crazy Mary," a song that explores the mysterious world of mental illness and human darkness.
