La figura de King Diamond es demasiado larga e influyente como para no ser mencionado como uno de los artistas más importantes de la historia del Metal. Precursores, entre otros, de lo que más tarde sería el Black Metal, el sonido de Mercyful Fate está más pegado a la sombra del Heavy Metal más clásico, pues la influencia sobre el Black Metal es puramente estética. 'Don't break the oath' es el último disco de la primera etapa de los daneses previa a la formación de la banda en solitario de King Diamond. Por supuesto es oscuro y supera con creces a 'Melissa', que de por sí supone un gran clásico ochentero. La realidad es que Mercyful Fate llevaban la originalidad por bandera, pues su propuesta no respondía a lo que se hacía habitualmente, dotando a ese Heavy Metal clásico una dosis de oscuridad que sigue poniendo la piel de punta.
