It simultaneously tries too hard whilst also being Marlon Blando. Generic late 60s soul, which is inoffensive but lacks something. Agree that the Aretha covers sound a little thin in comparison to the originals.

I don't know what it sounded like for the target audience in 1969, but at this distance, it wasn't a good choice to end each side with a cover of an Aretha classic; it's cliche to the point of cringe, and it brings my rating down quite a bit. Other than that, the material is really well chosen, the performances are excellent, and it's the first in a string of excellent, funky albums by Ann Peebles.
