Similar to Katy Moffatt's 1970's branding as a country singer and then a California singer-songwriter, the producers at Capitol did not know what to do with the diverse talents of Marcia Ball, and her first record is a confused attempt at marketing her as an outlaw country artist.

While Ball is certainly outlaw, she really isn't country. Her music is the boogie woogie south coast blues that she had better luck presenting once she recorded for Rounder Records years later.

This Capitol debut has not been reissued but curiously the first track appears on the recent "Outlaws and Armadillos" compilation, an excellt collection of 70s Texas outlaw music. Rodney Crowell wrote the track and it sounds like he provides harmony vocals too.

Track Pick: Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight
