Underrated album, The first Stones album that was just flat out in your face rock...fav song: "When the whip comes down"...by far their biggest album (8M copies)due largely to the controversy of the song "Some girl" with the lyric "...black girls just want to get F**ked all night"..many chains took the album out of their stores which just made people want to buy it more(our chain included, unfortunately it was run by a "religious" person. But they waited until we had already sold over 10000 copies before they pulled it). It was only the second time in my memory when a song was so controversial that stores pulled it from their shelves the other was Janis Ian's 1966 song "Society's Child" and I don't know the reason why that song stirred things up so much, I think that it had something to do with interracial relationships? What a surprise. In the midst of the Stones slow decline from their 60s and early 70s dominance to the divisive, drug-bloated mess of the 80s, they shock us with this gem. Varied, creative, and driven. Ranks up there with the Beggars to Exile streak.

Muscular and lean, this album packed a lot of punch in a short amount of time. The first Stones album that I loved at first listen. I still have the original vinyl cover with the celebrities photos before they had to redesign the cover.

I absolutely hate their version of "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)", but every other track on this album is really good. Coming out of their mid-70s slump, this album feels like the band being reenergised and discovering their youth. I guess you can thank punk and disco for that. "Miss You" is a soul-blues-inflected disco prowler that is so damn catchy, "When the Whip Comes Down" is one of the Stones' faster and harder songs and veers extremely close to punk blues, "Beast of Burden" is absolutely marvellous and the best song on the album, "Far Away Eyes" is a solid country-tinged track, "Shattered" is interesting and catchy but the album should have closed with "Beast of Burden". Overall, the band sounds very focused on this album, which helps significantly to make it a great album and a worthwhile listen.

Some Girls and Tattoo You are the last classic Stones albums.

Awesome album from start to finish (almost--the wildly popular opener Miss You is actually weak commercial schlock relative to the rest of the album). It has great deep cuts like When the Whip Comes Down and Far Away Eyes, and finishes with possibly the best ever 1-2 closing punch in Beast of Burden and Shattered.
