Early 70 curved prog
A little bit of the then trendy rock-classical crossover mixed with a lot of Jefferson Airplane = A prog rock monster is born! Not quite over the top enough to make the experiment a success, but at least 75% of this record is 'a trip'.
Violin prog! Or maybe it's not yet prog - the prog elements are good deal less intrusive here than with fellow violin enthusiasts High Tide and Gentle Giant. At any rate, 'It Happened Today' is an impressive opener - Sonja Kristina croons in hallucinatory fashion overtop crashing pianos and climbing guitars before giving way to a pastoral series of filter washes that serve to introduce Paul Sax' violin. 'Hide and Seek' and 'Situations' are also quite good. 'Vivaldi' and its reiteration 'Vivaldi with Cannons' are the album's main missteps. 'Vivaldi' begins as an innocuous gimmick - an exercise in violin-driven rock - but it gets pretty grating in the middle sections. Still, the album is quite pleasant, if a little slight.
