Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 83.5/100, a mean average of 82.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.3.

Just purchased because of a recent a recent listen on Astral Weeks. Definitely more diverse and an immediate entertaining listen. How he uses instrumentation is impressive and it makes him uniquely his own, I did like the brass used on this album. As far as I'm concerned, the song "Moondance" is fantabulous, love the sax and bass. Side 1 is near perfect and Side 2 is good but just can't match the solid songs on side 1. Now that I've listen to both albums a couple of times this album (Crazy Love) has a slight edge over Astral Weeks.

I,ve got both Moondance and Astral weeks and have listened to both many times ...I don't understand why Moondance is not rated better than Astral weeks ...kinda dents my faith in the ratings system.

Van Morrison is a musical genius. The way he utilises such a vast array of instrumentation is so impressive and he makes the sound uniquely his own. There is no one who sounds like Van Morrison in relation to his singing and also his music. His sound is so rich and grand which makes for an extremely satisfying listen. This works best on side 1 where he just goes on a run of 5 outstanding tracks in a row. It is a near perfect side 1 which does lead to an obvious dip in quality on side 2. He maintains his quality musicianship on this side however and we are treated to some rewarding deep cuts such as These Dreams Of You and Everyone. This side may hold the record back in terms of being amongst the very greatest due to it not being consistent but it is still very good. Overall, if side 1's quality was maintained this would be in the argument for greatest album of all time but its second side is still thoroughly enjoyable which makes this well worth a listen.
