This album is a selection of songs recorded in November 1971 in London by Monk and his trio, with Art Blakey on drums and Al McKibbon on bass. 7 songs are Monk solo on the piano while the 5 others are in trio.
I'm a huge fan of Monk and I consider the songs recorded in this London session as his musical peak. His playing is amazing and Blakey and McKibbon are definitely the perfect rhythm section for Monk. I can't find the words to explain exactly why this is so good, but it is. Just listen to the music, I think you'll feel it too.
I don't understand why there hasn't been an official album made from this recordings, they are SO good. However, you can now find a complete collection of the London recordings or a selection like this one. Both seems to have come out somewhere in the 80's, but it isn't clear exactly when. But I'm sure glad they are now available, because for me, they are the definite Monk recordings.
