Pianist and band leader McCoy Tyner assembled what he has titled McCoy Tyner Big Band for this 1991 release on Verve/Birdology (Cat#: Verve Records – 314 513 573-2, Birdology – 314 513 573-2) of self-composed and performing other composer's works. The seven selections here feature an 15 piece ensemble and the jazz is deep. Tyner dusts off the old Ellington classic "In A Sentimental Mood" as the album closer, but his contemporary groove shines throughout the tracks leading up to this scintillating conclusion. A lot of hard work happens in the background to keep BEA running, and it's especially difficult to do this when we can't pay our hosting fees :(
