At the time of its initial 1973 release on the Flying Dutchman label, Trumpeter Bobby Hackett had been in the music business for nearly 50 years. Paired with "special guest" vocalist Teresa Brewer, and leading a band of phenomenally talented musicians, Hackett demonstrates why he was often compared to Bix Beiderbecke throughout his career. The ten tracks on this album (Cat#: FD 10159) find the ensemble moving from graceful ballads to spirited bebop of the era. The nuanced trumpeting of Hackett and trombonist Vic Dickenson show an intuitive chemistry honed through years of playing together. Brewer (experiencing a career resurgence at the time of this recording) provides an extraordinary counterpoint to the fine musicianship. The version I have on hand is the CD release by CBS Special Products (Cat#: AK 40234) which became available in 1989. Authenticated on discogs.com
