(I've just written a review for the maccabees, so please understand the basis of comparison.) This is laid-back, spacious indie pop. Sure, the 2012 maccabees album is doing about the same thing, but the lightships are less bludgeoning in delivery and production value. Their songwriting is more subtle and less melodramatic than the maccabees as well. I appreciate this about lightships. I also appreciate that they don't sound like one of many hoards of radiohead derivatives (like maccabees). They're more like big star meets yo la tengo or james iha fronting the pumpkins.
