Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Some songs have pretty convincing 80's beats, Ken Laszlo style
“Girl With No Face” is centered on Allie’s performance. She will whip her voice into a frenzy and sell some strange lyrics. “Off With Her Tits” would never work any other way. The 70s /80s elements work best when they are used most aggressively. The exaggerated pieces lend themselves well to Allie’s darker lyrics and frantic singing. “Weird World” is a great example with its switching between post-punk and synthpop and the increased pressure on each chorus. When used more conservatively, it feels a bit goofy. Rather than being striking, it comes off a bit more dated. Even with its slockier moments, the execution is strong enough to keep the album in the green.
