This album was just plain awful. Stupid and awful. DiFranco, for those who don’t know, is quite the political activist and doesn’t hold back at all on this album. Not that there’s anything wrong with political activism in music, but she does a very poor job of it here. This is not to say I dislike DiFranco either, she’s released some decent music, but this is definitely not one of them. This is just awful. There were one or two songs that I didn’t hate, thus the two and not one out of five rating, but the majority of it I couldn’t stand. The worst track is the title track “Which Side Are You On", a revamping of the original Pete Seeger song, made to reflect current politics. This message is exactly what is wrong with politics today, this “Us vs. Them" mentality. In the song she continuously sings about fighting against the other side as if they’re some kind of enemy, some kind of hateful battle. That mentality is useless in politics and the only way politics can succeed well is when people work together, not against each other. This album is awful. Don’t bother with it.
