There needs to be a term for this kind of music that’s been gaining such popularity so quickly. Mumford & Sons, The Avett Brothers, The Punch Brothers, Trampled By Turtles, and now The Lumineers. It’s like all of a sudden the public cares a little bit about bluegrass. But it’s not “true" bluegrass, you see. It’s poppy bluegrass. It’s folk rock that has elements of bluegrass (tight harmonies, banjo, mandolin) mixed with elements of pop. There hasn’t been a good name for it yet. Some would say “progressive bluegrass" or “newgrass" but those have somewhat different meanings. I think the best way to describe it is this: it’s banjo pop. Pop music lead by a banjo and all those folk/bluegrass elements.

The Lumineers debut album is banjo pop at it’s best. The songs are incredibly well-written both lyrically and musically, and the album is a wonderful, coherent idea. These guys have a bright future in a world that is beginning to love banjo pop.

A couple years ago, a friend asked me to explain the appeal of "Ho Hey," the lead single from this album. What I said--and it makes more sense to me now more than ever--is that people are desperate for a sense of connection, a sense of belonging, a sense of community. They want to sing together. Which is why they're especially drawn to the catchy chorus, with the lines, "I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart." The rest of the songs don't quite hit the same Colorado folksy peak, but "Dead Sea" is pretty great, too. (Edited)

Well-written and catchy. Not everything needs to be innovative to be good. I guess it's the association with pop, but I think pop as a genre in general is too often written off.

Flowers in Your Hair and Stubborn Love are my favorites. (Edited)

Other than the popular 'Ho Hey' there are quite a few surprising quality tracks such as the opening track, 'Dead Sea' and 'Slow it Down' side A seems superior. The funny thing is I cannot stand that slack-jawed yokel cornball banjo mandolin Mumford & Son

There's nothing offensive here. Some very catchy tunes. Nice album. Bought it in the back of them supporting Tom pretty at Hyde Park a couple of months before he passed away. They were very good.
