Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 67.1/100, a mean average of 66.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 66.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.1.

I rarely get overly critical about things but this one just manages to disappoint me entirely. I didn't like Infintie Arms much but it was at least a notch or two better than this. This is the weakest album I've heard this side of Heathen Chemistry. There's maybe two tracks (101 Heartbreak & Slow Cruel Hands of Time) that I'd go back to if I had to but when even the band prefers to forget this material in their setlists, you know something's off. Thank god they rectified themselves by returning to their strengths with this year's Why Are You OK?.

It's not fair of me to expect Band of Horses to keep making Cease to Being over and over. But I am just not sure how to digest this one. The band is all over the place, sounding at times like themselves, and at others more like Neil Young (that's not a dig; I've made my piece with Young). I just don't get what they're going for. These songs sound fine live, so I suspect I can actually blame producer Glyn Johns, whose long list of musical sins includes unleashing The Eagles on the world.

This band just seems to be getting blander.... but there are still some worthwhile moments here.
