One of the main reasons that Kiss is better than any other chart pop album I've ever heard is that it's innocent without being lame. CRJ is different from Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Rihanna, etc. in that she doesn't follow the drunk-party-sex canon (which isn't a bad thing either) of most pop artists. Her songs are predominantly about young innocent love, and even the hints of innuendo are hidden behind strong lyrics. The irony of it all is that she is much older than her pop star counterparts, and yet she understands the idea of this love better than all of them. This whole album is the musical embodiment of loving for the first time. It's incredibly sweet but also heart-wrenching when you realize that it's nearly impossible to recreate those feelings of that first love. So ya, it's not your average pop album.

CRJ sounds the same as Rihanna in the same way that the Kinks sound like the Beatles. Same genre, but different takes. They sound the same to you because you don't take the time to know the genre. The "innocent love" theme of Kiss works because the music embodies the lyrics. Her voice is a lot more sweet and youthful than other pop artists, and the melodies play on that strength. In terms of innovation, I think it is unique. I can't name one artist of any genre that does a better job at portraying the purity of love than she does.

I'll admit. I really am starting to like this album.

Jeez guys, it’s just a pop record. And I’m not only talking to people who adore this album, but also the people who think a 5/100 is an accurate rating for any album and not at all just an act out of spite. I believe the worst rating you can give an album is a mediocre one; haters just secretly love it, but hate the fact that they do because they religiously hold on to a belief of what good music should be. They might believe that lyrics should be deep, or that VST plugins are the devil, or just flatout have an aversion towards anything that’s slightly upbeat like they’re afraid they might enjoy something in their goddamn lives.

But there is no denying that the vocals are good, the production is very satisfying to the ear, the songwriting is relatable. Just a solid album overall. But it does nothing really special. If I would be in the mood for some good electropop, I’d grab me Kylie’s Fever or Britney’s Blackout, not this, but I enjoyed it.
