Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Sometimes I forget just how much I love pop music, and listening to ‘The Loneliest Time’ from start to finish reminded me of this fact.
I never in a million years thought that I would have a Carly Rae Jepsen record in my Album of the Year watch. The songwriting, production, instrumentation choices, Rufus-collab, all of it is so surprisingly good.

After three robust synthpop pastiches, Carly Rae Jepsen broadens her reach further than ever. Steeped in '60s and '70s songwriting and pop stylings that, while still cloaked in modern aesthetics, are often more organic and warm. What this lacks in immediacy or fun it tries to make up for in its maturity and sense of humor. I'm more in admiration for the color and breadth of influences than I am won over by the songs themselves, but it's hard not to like this one.
