Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

Soft Machine had always been somewhat the jokers. With this release, they dispense with that and focus on straightforward jazz-rock, which they do to excellent effect. The continuous vibe begins with the very strong, 5-part suite, Hazard Profile. This sets the tone for the rest of the album – mostly frantic guitars (an instrument which had been ignored by the band for several years) and strong on tunes. There is little let-up, both in the music and the quality – in fact, there is only one track which doesn’t hit the spot particularly highly, the aptly named Four Gongs Two Drums: everyone was doing drum solos, so why couldn’t Soft Machine? There isn’t much to distinguish one track from the next, for the most part, but listening to the whole album as a piece of work, this barely matters.
High Points: Hazard Profile Part One; Land Of The Bag Snake; The Floating World
Two words: Allan. Holdsworth.
the album was very smartly constructed
