Buried Treasure Alert!

Whoever this guy is, he apparently only released this one obscure album in 1973 and then promptly disappeared. And that's too bad because this is one of the best and most interesting singer-songwriter albums I've heard in a long time. Spare and intimate, it's just Dave and his guitar with a few vocal harmony overdubs. Remarkably, several of the songs sound like a proto-Elliott Smith. Others are reminiscent of solo George Harrison in acoustic mode.

So nice I had to listen to it twice (instead of moving on to the next album in my queue), and I liked it even better the second time. I'd give this a perfect score if not for 2 or 3 flimsy throwaway songs among the 14 tracks, most of which are stunningly good. And fans of acoustic guitar will be impressed by Ellis' skill on the instrument. "Album" is a quiet gem that definitely deserves more recognition.
