Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. First album by Rita, who was still in Os Mutantes and years away from stardom.
It's a quirky record, with only one minor hit, a version in Portuguese (by Nara Leão) for Georges Moustaki's biblical adaptation"Joseph". There are also ballads, some hints of psychedelic rock, a tango, the Hawaiian-inspired "Hulla-Hulla", a cover from The Beatles and the bizarre "Macarrão com Linguiça e Pimentão", with a culinary recipe as lyrics.
