Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 7% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.3/100, a mean average of 75.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.4.

Music critics started calling this sort of music "math rock" because they got tired of having to use terms like "angular," "abrasive," "aggressive," "rhythmically complex," "sharp-edged," "start-stop," and "spiky" all the time. Also, I suspect they didn't really like it, so they figured if they associated it with "math" (which everyone hates), nobody would buy it and they'd stop making albums like this. But they were wrong! So-called math rock bands continue to make records to this very day. "At Action Park" is a seminal album in the genre (if it can be called a "genre"), and personally I like it a lot better than equally seminal LPs like Slint's "Spiderland" or Polvo's "Today's Active Lifestyles." It may very well be the only album in the genre (if it can be called that) I've ever actually liked enough to listen to all the way through, which is hard because of my intense hatred of math.
