In questo disco la coppia Battisti-Mogol sembra non porsi limiti sul cosa dire e sul come dirlo. Le atmosfere dell'album sono più cupe che in passato, in linea con certe sonorità del tempo; la musica è, di base, spesso acustica; a volte trasmette quella fedeltà alla terra presente già a partire dalla copertina e che poi troviamo nei testi ( "La canzone della terra" ). I testi, appunto: tra i più caustici di Mogol ( la critica sociale di "Ma è un canto brasileiro" o quella contro le ipocrisie paesane di "Le allettanti promesse" ), ma spesso anche tra i più lirici...
