Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.1/100, a mean average of 77.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.1.

Easily digestible rock record when the Hip were still at their creative peak. There are plenty of rockers. Bobcaygeon is possibly the best Hip song ever, but there's some gold in the deep cuts too. I would consider Phantom Power to be a return to form after some experimentation with Trouble at the Henhouse.

Key Tracks: Poets, Bobcaygeon, Membership, Fireworks, Membership, Escape is At Hand for the Traveling Man, Emperor Penguin

Being Canadian and a LONG time fan, this is perhaps my favourite Hip Album. Front to back, like many of their albums, this is so great and shows the band really coming into their own.

A bit of an oddity, this album was the first of a trio of records that began to alienate the Hip's original fanbase. An improvement over Trouble in the Henhouse, Phantom Power also finds the Hip exploring more 'pop' themes while losing the rough edges that had so often defined the production style of their previous records. Despite some of these shortcomings, the Hip managed to pull out a few of the best songs of their repertoire including "Bobcaygeon", "Emperor Penguin", and my personal favourite Hip song of all time: "Escape is at Hand...".

A few real standouts, but the majority of this album is filler. Bobcaygeon and Fireworks are great. This marks the end of the Hip's peak.

The band's sixth full length studio album finds them still peaking. This was a great return to form after the lukewarm Trouble at the Henhouse. Bobcaygeon is a Canlit classic and there are seven songs on this album that I absolutely love.
