Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

"Black and White", the third Stanglers album, has the distinctive characteristics from the first two albums; the special organ-playing from Dave Greenfield, the heavy and often melodic bass lines from Jean-Jacques Burnel and, of course, Hugh Cornwell’s easily recognizable vocals.
What "Black and White" probably lacks In comparison to its predecessors, are the really good and memorable numbers. Most people will probably remember the single "Nice" n 'Sleazy ", but apart from this there probably are not many songs that could not be left out on a retrospective collection. I would probably also include "Tank" for the fine keyboard line and the pretty catchy "Death and Night and Blood".
All in all, a slightly disappointing album.
Wasn't over fussed on this when I picked it up in my punk fascination faze as a teenager but now I think it's just about as good as anything they did. I definitely like it now better than Heroes album. It's a little challenging, punk, post punk & kind of proggy in a way all mixed together. Still with their wonderful sense of melody. As my appreciation of their other albums fades slightly, this only grows.
Not nearly as good as their first two albums but still decent.
