This mixing style of putting the vocals and drums above everything else really strips away what little nuance Animal Collective were willing to inject into the huge slabs of busy noise that they got into with Centipede Hz and evidently continued for at least a year afterwards as a touring unit. The vocals also rarely get electronic effects thrown on, so they sound pretty out of place in some of the soundscapes that get made. This version of Honeycomb is exemplary and might be the best version I've heard, being as it is one of the CHz-era compositions they strip down a bit here and re-think. My Girls is also treated fairly well here. Anyone who is a fan of Feels, Fall Be Kind, or Centipede Hz will find lots to love here, but those like me who count all three as in the lower half of the band's discography or worse don't get many bones thrown to them in terms of re-evaluations of material that doesn't stick in the studio versions.
