It was in a rustic cabin in the Adirondacks, curled up under a sleeping bag with a woman I loved at the time, drinking beer out of a solo cup, that I first heard All About Town. The first album by Scott Miller and company, Just Add Ice, had established the V-Roys' chops as Knoxville's best bar band, but All About Town is superior in just about every way: more subtle, more tender, better crafted. "Mary," sung by Miller and narrated by a man dying of lung cancer reflecting on the all-too-brief life that he has lived, juxtaposes its somber subject matter with an upbeat tempo that reminds us just how ephemeral this life really is.
