One of the greatest video game composers out there. Influenced heavily by prog rock and baroque works in the early days before growing more eclectic as the audio chips improved. Highly memorable, catchy themes that feature prominently in the games; he's not as "atmospheric" as some other great VG composers, not does he try to be. Umeatsu-composed RPGs feel like musicals, which was perfect for the time; nowadays, with voice acting and fancy graphics, VG music has to take on a slightly less prominent, more atmospheric role to avoid overdoing things. Uematsu has adapted fairly well, though - his contributions to Lost Odyssey and Final Fantasy 14 are outstanding, even though they appropriately take more of a complementary backseat to the other presentation elements. His only equal in the industry was his rival at Squaresoft: Yasunori Mitsuda.
