Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Totally dropped off after their first two albums do to trying too hard to create catchy radio hits (see hooking up with Kings Of Leon producers) and totally lost their unique great sound from their debut. However, Loyalty to Loyalty, albeit different from Robbers, is very good in it's own right because it does not sacrifice their original musical integrity established in the debut. Don't bother after their second album, you'll notice their "catchy Kings of Leon style" didn't garner any radio hits.
