The greatest singer/songwriter you've never heard of. His masterpiece, "The Shaming of the True," released posthumously in 2000, was a concept album that spoke boldly and eloquently about the music industry's crueler, bleaker side. If that industry had given Gilbert his due before his untimely passing in '96, he would have been a superstar, and rightfully so.
Take a few minutes to surf around the official website, lovingly maintained by his estate even after his death. If you're just looking to get your feet wet, try "Toy Matinee," the album by the art-rock duo of the same name (featuring big-name producer Patrick Leonard), or "Thud," Gilbert's first solo project, on which he used his skills as a multi-instrumentalist and a fine songwriter to great result.
