Kid Ory's first paid gig was playing banjo for Buddy Bolden-- that's taproot stuff. Ory was the first paid gig for Louis Armstrong.
His "1954" was the first 33 1/3 in my household, 001 on its label, and so became the logical starting point for my album of the year list. He's just it to me-- sublime, humorous, graceful, infectious, demanding. "You Better Do What Ory Say..."
