I never heard other "Tragic" so frightening and uplifting at same time: it starts with martial percussion rhythms, thrilling our heart and senses - we almost hear the pain, the rage, the beauty. And the cowbells, oh my, what a magical moment to be presented on a symphony! Szell was a master of discipline but he brought a otherworldly element to every (recorded) piece he conducted. A cheap Essential Classics from Sony. [First added to this chart: 07/15/2013]

If you want a creepy experience, try the 8th symphony by Shostakovich. Bernard Haitink is superb here, an assertive maestro full of humanity, revealing the tenderness of the score but also its brutal forces. The symphony ends with peaced exhaustion... [First added to this chart: 07/15/2013]

An unbelievable masterpiece by a catholic composer, incorporating oriental influences and a modern language that few contemporary composers achieved. Subliminal subtleties play with a colourful palette. Nothing here belongs to this world. Easily the greatest 20th century piece of music for orchestra, an instant classic! Berio conducting Berio. The recordings are from 1968 and 1972 with his mistress (and muse) Cathy Berberian as the astonishing mezzo-soprano. "Recital" is almost a dadaist piece, fractionated and full of musical and literary references. But the high point here is the wonderful "Folk Songs", undoubdtedly one of the greatest song-cycles of 20th century. [First added to this chart: 07/15/2013]

The film is one of the greatest celluloid epics ever. And the music (O.S.T. as we say nowadays, but it was made as an oratorio) is not of lesser quality. Gergiev has one of the best recordings with full sound, but this Melodia album (later released in Le Chant du Monde) is much more exhilarating. Stassevitch is brisker, rougher and faster, with greater sense of tragedy and drama. "The Simpleton" always filled me with frighten, showing such devilish percussion and in "Dance of the Opritchniks" never a russian dance sounded more enthusiastic and passionate. Gutiérrez, a quite unknown cuban pianist gives here the perfect playing to Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto. Neither Argerich or Kissin were better. The passionate atmosphere is full of mystery and totally spine-chilling, even in the pianissimos. The orchestra and maestro helped the colourful brightness. The 2nd Concerto is admirable, too. This is a 50's recording and one of the greatest Mozart albums I own, though I love this opera. Here we have dark Wolfgang, melancholic Amadeus and esoteric Mozart. Even the mono sound brings a shady definition to the drama. The singers are top-class away from histrionically ego exposition. And Fricsay, the humble hungarian maestro, was the methodical wizard. Crumb works in higher planes, even with whales voices. His music approaches Messiaen's subtility and is miles away from serialism, although never denying Schoenberg's legacy. He's an independent voice in American contemporary music, like Harry Partch, Lou Harrison and Morton Feldman. [First added to this chart: 07/15/2013]

Sometimes I dislike Solti rushed tempi in Mahler symphonies, but this recording is in many aspects the quintessential Mahler album: mysterious, sarcastic, otherworldly, dissonant, tender, spiritual... Solti in one of his best recordings with a sumptuous orchestra. [First added to this chart: 07/15/2013]

Barenboim is incredibly at home with these ethereal and delightful scores. "La Mer" is just one of the most revolutionary 19th century works and "Nocturnes" brings that inscrutable quality all complex music needs. [First added to this chart: 07/16/2013]
