Berio conducting Berio. The recordings are from 1968 and 1972 with his mistress (and muse) Cathy Berberian as the astonishing mezzo-soprano. "Recital" is almost a dadaist piece, fractionated and full of musical and literary references. But the high point here is the wonderful "Folk Songs", undoubdtedly one of the greatest song-cycles of 20th century.

Barenboim is incredibly at home with these ethereal and delightful scores. "La Mer" is just one of the most revolutionary 19th century works and "Nocturnes" brings that inscrutable quality all complex music needs.

Janácek (pardon the lack of accents) is probably one of the most vibrant 20th century composers, the man was a unbelievable encyclopedia of catchy melodies and in his works there's no place to monotony or dull music. The Glagolitic Mass is a cave-like mass, with sparkling, frantic and even frightening moments. Here, MacKerras gives the perfect lecture. The Psalmus Hungaricus by Kodály is no lesser interesting, a darker piece with a boys choir.

Dazzling and frightening music, with awesome strings leading the procession followed by mysterious assorted percussion echoing through corridors of huge and ancient halls of lost cities, forbidden planets, dozens of colorful moons covering the sky. Lutoslawski is the man to our dreams and nightmares. Essential.
