There's a review that criticizes these songs as mere character sketches in which "very little happens." If that's what you're taking away from these songs, you're just not listening. I've said it before, but his ability to create a whole world in four minutes is masterful. For my money, there is no better songwriter working right now.

Her musical sensibility is impeccable and she turns out great melodies. This album just sounds amazing. Lyrically, there's a playfulness to her songs that hearkens to 60/70s female country artists. She does fall back on clever phrases a bit too often, but her lyrics have matured overall. Give her a few more years and another couple of albums and she'll be unstoppable.

A good debut from a veteran songwriter. There's a raw energy to his live performances that gets lost here. However, this is one of the strongest country releases this year and, if nothing else, I am happy to see it getting so much attention in Nashville. [First added to this chart: 01/28/2016]

Having gotten the requisite country record out of their system, this is a return to classic Decemberists territory. Song topics include children and the loss thereof, historical military, the benefits of summer relative to winter, tall ship sailing, and, of course, lust and murder. And there's plenty of obscure vocabulary deployed. In addition to big words you already know (e.g., obverse, condescend, misbegotten), there's also prevaricate, mistral, eidolon, and sibylline. Most importantly, these are catchy songs. There's hardly a mistep on the whole record.

These guys hail from New Albany, Indiana, right down the road from Corydon, where I spent a lot of time growing up. New Albany was never a place that impressed me much, but this album is a testament to the fact that good bands can form anywhere.

I was never a huge Oasis fan, mostly on account of the megalomania. But Noel Gallagher definitely has a knack for catchy songs. His first album under the High Flying Birds name was a huge disappointment, but this follow-up is really good. I don't think there's anything to match his best songs with Oasis, but the album is more even than any of those records.

This is the first album from Erika Wennerstrom that has the same lineup as the previous album. Maybe I'm imagining things, but I think this album reflects that lack of turmoil. As with their previous releases, it's a solid collection with a couple of killer tracks.

I really enjoyed their debut, but I felt like they lost the thread on the follow-ups. The line between homage and parody was always pretty thin, but I just couldn't take those albums seriously. This one, however, is fantastic. This may actually be their best album. It just goes to show that, when all else fails, you should sing about vikings.

This album is a perfect example of the rock-country mix that was enjoying some popularity before bro-country took over and destroyed Nashville. Sounding every bit like a Texas country artist should, Cody Jinks isn't reinventing anything here. This album basically sounds like a bar band, with all the polish that years of touring affords.
