"After all these years, Slowdive still sound like a miracle occurring. They've lost nothing and have instead turned out an album that like before, shows no sign of them compromising their vision. The material, is perhaps more deep-set and knottier than before, especially so on the second half where it sounds like something approaching a frown is crossing Neil Halsteads' mighty countenance.
There are even some echoes of the past, with Go Get It featuring the burnt out coda of Souvlaki Space Station and Falling Ashes' simple piano motif being oddly reminiscent of Sigur Ros, one of their many admirers. The experimentation of Pygmalion also features in most of the material, particularly the use of repetition not unlike the use of loops on that album.
What more is there to say? As a comeback album it's a resounding success and easily their best since Souvlaki.
'Tis beautiful." May 2017

"Sunday, the 3rd of February 2013, 6:00 a.m. is forever going to be burned indelibly on my memory not least because it was my first listen to m b v, but because it's release was a genuine event and more importantly because it was fucking brilliant.
Here, like their previous releases, was music that had very little to do with the real world, it was (whisper it) incorporeal. Wasn't 'who see's you' the soundtrack to your soul bursting through the clouds to arrive at heaven's gate, or 'in another way' perfect for that scene where everything gets heavily psychedelic in '2001', or 'wonder 2' My Bloody Valentine at their most bonkers and their most bafflingly disorientating.
m b v was the soundtrack to February 2013, scratch that, 2013 and it was fucking great." February 2013

"I don't know, is everyone listening to the same album as me? Cos everyone's complaining how difficult a listen it is, lacking any discernable singles etc etc, when it just sounds like a perfectly smooth listen with subtle but obvious earworm pop songs all the same.
In fact, I'll go to say Blond has so many of the qualities missing from white music these days: balls; new ideas; sonic innovation; and the ability to take the listener to new places. Just as much as this is a modern, 21st Century R'n'B album it's also a spiritual heir to works such as Closer or Loveless - it's that good. Simply put, Frank Ocean makes everyone else look like a bunch of clueless, ungainly fools. Wow." August 2016

"It's true, it's Merritt's best since '69 Love Songs' with some monster, killer songs on offer that easily rank as his best - even if it includes some of his oddest arrangements to date. There is one big difference though, where '69 Love Songs' favoured a more spartan instrumentation 'Memoir' is a hell of a lot more colourful, even at times psychedelic, befitting his familial background. Even so, he still finds room for the kind of piano-led compositions last seen on '69' or 'i'. Whatever, he's on top form here and this is gonna be glued to my stereo for a long, long time." "Vicious and unrelenting, this album's portrayal of domination, S & M, torture, and serial murder couldn't be more overwhelming if it's auteur's blood-smeared face were to rise up out of the hell it leaves in it's wake. As an artistic statement it's brave, whether it's healthy is debatable. " February 2014 [First added to this chart: 02/06/2014]

“As time goes by it becomes more and more apparent how Suede were one, if not THE most important band of the nineties. So after a few dodgy lps, it’s with some relief to report how this new album finds a re-energised, more vital Suede.
Although the tunes are not as instant as before, a pop heart still strongly beats within even if this is a more mature, wiser, darker Suede than ever. There’s even a return to some of the art-rock madness of Dog Man Star - and if that isn’t cause for celebration, I don’t know what is.
Simply put this is the best Suede have sounded since their heyday and no one can hold a candle to them when they’re on this form” September 2018

"Well, thankfully it's not a return to the follys of Carnival Of Light or Tarantula. They're still the same band that made those records, but more importantly they're still the same band that made Nowhere or Going Blank Again. To be specific, this is the direction Ride should have taken in 1993, with one eye on the classic records of the past and a foot in the sounds of tomorrow.
Their hippy past still lingers, for instance, if Weather Diaries were an item of clothing it'd be a brown corduroy pair of bell-bottoms but it's a fine album and it's damn good to have one of the best bands of the 90s back." June 2017

"Albums this special only come along once in a while, how it's managed to remain relatively ignored since it's release is criminal. What does it sound like? Imagine the Mama's & the Papa's or the Loving Spoonfull jamming with Slowdive and your nearly there, and yes it does sound better than that. A forgotten classic, Fading Parade's seamless dream-pop updates classic West Coast psychedelia for the 2010's." February 2011 [First added to this chart: 01/03/2012]

"It's easy to see why Viet Cong are so suited to a genre such as post-punk considering it came with the promise of heralding a 'limitless future' - for music at the very least. Songs often stop, take unexpected de-tours, and to paraphrase the Young Marble Giants constantly change. Like Interpol with 'Turn on the Bright Lights' Viet Cong is a re-boot of a classic sound with frequent and obvious spot-the-influence moments (Gang of Four, This Heat, Wire etc etc) with some of the quirks and eccentricities that half the band shared in their previous incarnation as Women still clearly on show.
It is very much an albums album, with it's only one real concession to pop-music being the single 'Continental Shelf', all the while conjuring an oppressive Orwellian atmosphere where the buildings are healthy...even if the people aren't, it is rarely predictable even if it is a jarring, bumpy ride but it is also excellent. "Studio reworkings of live Chris & Cosey tracks that are no less engaging - or thrilling for that matter. Putting the sensual into the sexual; hedonistic, paganistic, pugilistic, and clearly enjoying itself, it is (ahem) hot on the heels of love." February 2015 [First added to this chart: 03/02/2015]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.1/100, a mean average of 86.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.4.

OK, so why have I included so many Perfume Genius lps? Well, I think this guy is great and he’s been consistently excellent with each release. Definitely one of the best artists of the 10’s. Give him a chance you might be pleasantly surprised.

I wasn't personally a big fan of your overall chart, and though maybe I don't agree with many of the picks (four PG albums and a total absence of hip hop are my main gripes) the inclusion of the mini reviews are a joy to read. Great stuff!!
