The late seventies were a time of musical change...punk, disco, and the arrival to the mainstream of some really great reggae music. It was political, spiritual, and powerfully musical. Unlike the watered down "smoke weed" reggae of later years, Burning Spear was a leading light in the genre. Dry & Heavy was their 5th album, so they were already established in the reggae community. Led by Winston Rodney, the songs are powerful Rastafarian messages...but they also sound really great.
The album is a highlight as a whole. Every song is excellent, well written, and expertly played. The entire Burning Spear catalog is great, and Dry & Heavy stands up as strong as any of them. Rodney still performs as Burning Spear...an important act in the legacy of reggae. [First added to this chart: 02/05/2013]

Unless your name is Marley, your chances of having a well known reggae album in the US are slim and none. Which is too bad, because Culture was one of the best reggae bands you'd ever hear. Two Sevens Clash was born as a vision by singer Joseph Hill, predicting that the date 7/7/77 would be a holy day of judgement. The album is stunning and still holds up today as strong as it did then. The vocals are great, the songs carry strong spiritual images, and reggae was never played more beautifully as it is here. In 2002, the album was named by Rolling Stone as #25 of the 50 coolest albums of all time...how cool is that? It's that good.
Culture had a career spanning 28 albums before the sudden death of Hill on tour in 2006. Like Marley, his legacy is being carried on by his son. [First added to this chart: 04/13/2012]
