1982 Album Of The Day: January 14th 2019. Can white men play funk? This was one of the important questions of the day back in 1982 at NME among the trendy music press cognoscenti. A band of Mancunian hipsters in collar-less shirts and white shorts were attempting to ignite the funk flame at Factory Records and ACR lead the pack into the UK album charts at number 53. "Knife Cuts Water" is a standout track and was a popular 12" on the indi chart or 'DiY' chart as it was sometimes known at the time.

January 15th 2019. Down among the wine bars in the south of England at the same time muso's were also preoccupied with much the same concerns. Level 42 unleashed an influential breakthrough debut album in 1981 and now Shakatak added a twist of smooth jazz a la Spyro Gyro and created an utterly boring album. Ten long tracks of latin funk, but nothing really provokes excitement, piano's tinkle and girl vocalists trill and coo, to no particular purpose.

Played on January 16th 2019. Released January 11th 1982 in the UK, did not chart. Listened to this for a bit of colour after the two wet and slippery funk albums. But it only made me feel anxious because the songs are so irritating and it sounds like it hasn't decided what genre of music it is! The singer's nasal voice annoyed me, the saxophone made me want to switch off and the production was funny and dated. What kind of new wave albums have saxophones on them? This seems to be a very trendy New York thing back in 1982. I fear I won't have heard it for the last time.
