2021 has proven itself to be a bit more impressive than 2020 while also maybe demonstrating a broad trend of returning to the fundamentals of songwriting that pre-covid was sort of being smashed open (not to say experimental things aren't happening, they're just being renegotiated by the conditions of production).

Delta Estácio Blues is the perfect merger of Nunes and Dinucci's experimental work in Meta Meta and subsequent solo Marçal records such as Encarnado, one of my favourite albums of the 2010s, and Nunes' recent string of collaborations with Cadu Tenório. Possibly the best album of the 2020s so far.

For now I find Cooksonia a little grating, but every song following is just amazing. Circle are an interesting band in their own right, but it's especially interesting how they worked together somewhat less experimental instrumentals wherein the rhythmic deviations feel almost like reactions to Dawson's unconventional - but now very much an on-brand personal style - vocal jumps. Kind of like Dawson is causing ripples in a still pool of water, intervening the music with his voice.

I remain unconvinced that this is the best followup that Schlagenheim could have had, and I think that's largely down to the absence of Matt because the stylistic decisions here are all really solid. Ascending Fourths is a godly tune and perhaps the best of the year.

This actually might be one of the more accessible Tenorio records. It's a bit stylistically chaotic and less thematic than his previous releases, but the focus on playing with confusing rhythms adds a lot of energy to Tenorio's otherwise very pensive music.
